ABBREVIATIONS

kfb – knit into front and back of stitch

k2tog – knit two stitches together

p2tog – purl two stitches together

ss – stocking stitch

TIPS

• Knit the Santa in a three or four ply and hang it on a Christmas tree or use it to decorate your festive table.
• •Knitted with DK or Chunky yarn it makes a lovely toy for a child.
• •Use the same pattern in different colours to knit a gnome.

INSTRUCTIONS

First leg
With black, cast on 24 st. 1st row (RS): p. 2nd row (WS): k. Rep last 2 rows 4 times. Cut thread. 7th row (RS): attach red and k. 8th row: p. Rep last 2 rows once more. Cut thread and put aside.

Second leg
Complete like first leg, but don’t cut thread.

Body
Next row: k to end, tie thread of leg that was put aside to thread you’re knitting and k across other leg to end. 48 st. Next row: p across both legs. Work another 8 rows in ss, ending with WS row.

Belt
Next row: attach black and p row. Next row: k. Cut black thread. Continue in ss with red for 7 rows, ending with RS row. Next row: p2tog across row. 24 st. Next row: kfb to end. 48 st. Cut red thread.

Head
Next row (WS): attach beige and p row. Work another 11 rows in gs. Cut beige thread.

Hat
Next row (WS): attach black and k row. Next row (RS): p. Next row (WS): k. Cut black thread.

Attach red and continue as follows:
1st row: (k10, k2tog) 4 times. 44 st. 2nd and each alt row: p. 3rd row: (k9, k2tog) 4 times. 40 st. 5th row: (k8, k2tog) 4 times. 36 st. 7th row: (k7, k2tog) 4 times. 32 st. Continue like this to (k1, k2tog) 4 times. 8 st. Next row: p. Next row:(p2tog) 4 times. 4 st. Next row: p. Next row: (k2tog) 2 times. Next row: p. Next row: k2tog. Cast off.

Arms (the same)
With black cast on 20 st and work 2 rows in back-to-front ss. Cut black thread. Attach red and work in ss for 10 rows. Cast off.

FINISHING OFF

With right sides together, sew up each leg at the bottom and inside. Sew up body but leave part in middle open. Sew head and hat to top. Turn out through opening to right side. Stuff and sew up opening. With right sides together, sew up arms at bottom and along sides, turn out and sew up at the top. Sew up sides of body. Thread red yarn around neck and tighten a bit. With white yarn and thick sewing needle make beard by looping yarn around your fingers and sewing it on to the face without tightening it too much. Make two rows of loops for beard. Sew bell to hat. Glue eyes on. Embroider nose with black thread. Sew button or clasp on belt.
