You need
Leftover cotton double ply in dark blue, white, maroon, lime green, orange, dark pink, turquoise and light blue; 3.5 mm crochet hook; needle to neaten loose threads

To fit pot plant containers with circumference of 36.5 cm at the top and 23 cm at the bottom

Method
Follow colour sequences on illustration or make own combinations. Start with 10 ch st, sl st in 1st ch st to make ring.
1st round: 3 ch st, 23 tr in ring, sl st at top in first 3 ch sts.
2nd round: 3 ch st, (2 tr in foll tr, 1 tr in foll tr) 11 times, 2 tr in foll tr, sl st at top in first 3 ch st (= 36 tr).
3rd round: 1 ch st, 1 dc in foll 4 tr, 2 dc in foll tr, (1 dc in foll 5 tr, 2 dc in foll tr) 5 times, sl st in 1st ch st (= 42 dc).
4th round: 3 ch st, 1 tr in each dc, sl st at top in first 3 ch st.
5th round: 3 ch st, 1 tr in foll 12 tr, 2 tr in foll tr, (1 tr in foll 13 tr, 2 tr in foll tr) 2 times, sl st at top in first 3 ch st. C/off.
6th round: in foll colour: 3 ch st, (1 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in same st as sl st, [skip 4 tr, (2 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in foll tr, skip 3 ch st, (2 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in foll tr] 4 times, skip 4 tr (2 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in foll tr, sl st at top if first 3 ch st.
7th round: slst in foll 2 tr and 1 ch st sp, 3 ch st (1 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in same 1 ch st sp, [(2 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in foll 1 ch st sp] 9 times, sl st at top in first 3 ch st. C/off.
8th round: in foll colour: start in any 1 ch st sp, (3 ch st, 1 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in same sp, 1 dc over foll two rounds, between the 2 pairs of tr (= spike stitch) (don’t pull yarn too tight), [(2 tr, 1 ch st, 2 tr) in foll 1 ch st sp, 1 spike stitch over previous 2 rounds] 9 times, sl st at top in first 3 ch st. C/off.
